Group Exercise Classes

All classes listed below are free for members. 

YMCA of Sandusky County members have access to fitness classes at the YMCA, Terra State, and Fremont Senior Center.

Group Fitness

The class focuses on the Pilates Principles and the classic mat sequence with a blend of

yoga poses. Participants will learn the techniques of the movement and the different breathing techniques with both disciplines of Pilates and Yoga. This class will help develop a strong inner core while helping sculpt long, lean muscles. This class is perfect for those that also want to work on their

Barre class is a workout technique inspired by elements of ballet, yoga, and Pilates. It focuses on low-impact, high-intensity movements designed to strengthen your body in ways that few other workouts can. Each barre class is designed to be a full-body, muscle endurance
workout.

The term ” boot camp ” is currently used in the fitness industry to describe group fitness classes that promote fat loss, camaraderie, and team effort. That’s what participants will experience with our Boot Camp classes! Our classes are designed to push people a little bit further than they would normally push themselves in the gym alone. Bringing together drumsticks, an exercise ball, and an exercise ball stand to create one of the most fun workouts you’ll ever do. Using the exercise ball and the floor as your drum, and mixing in fun moves, cardio drumming turns keeping a rhythm into a workout you won’t want to stop.

Settle in for the ride of your life! You choose your own workout level in this popular non-impact indoor cycling class. Our LeMond Revmaster Sport Bikes allow a cardiovascular workout that’s easy on feet and knees while allowing a high intensity of exercise. Keep track of your heart rate and calories burnt during your workout by easily syncing your personal heart rate monitor with the on-bike apparatus. Daily drop-in available.

This class is designed to help shed that excess fat while building strength and endurance. This class includes circuit training, cardio exercises, bodyweight exercises and finishes with core training and stretching for a complete workout.

Our Cardio Kickboxing class combines kickboxing movements, in a fast-paced manner, accompanied by strength training segments and core work. Participants will learn proper form for the jab, hooks, crosses, uppercuts, back kicks, front kicks, and the like—all engaging both your lower and upper body. Class is modifiable for most fitness levels.

Drew will take you through a creative interval workout focusing on mobility, strength, and endurance. Different pieces of equipment and bodyweight movements will be used to target all movement patterns, creating a full-body, challenging workout experience. All fitness levels are welcome.

Step aerobics is an up-tempo way to get your heart pumping and stay fit. Doing this choreographed cardio workout as part of a group exercise class can help build motivation and create a sense of community.

Functional strength training utilizing resistance exercise to better equip you to handle daily feats of strength and athleticism. Improve movement efficiency, coordination & mobility, and increase lean muscle mass to take on the physiological demands of real-life activities. (Options for all levels).

You’ll work the major muscle groups of your upper and lower body as well as enjoy abdominal work to stabilize and strengthen the core muscle groups. The instructor will lead the class in a variety of exercises using resistance equipment, body weight, stability balls, free weights and more to keep participants engaged and challenged.

We take the “work” out of workout, by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness class. This class is a total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, all the while you are boosting your energy!

Yoga, Tai Chi, & Pilates

Tai chi and qigong are traditional Chinese movement exercises that involve postures, gentle movements, mental focus, breathing, and relaxation. The class will focus on the 42 Forms Tai Chi that combines movements drawn from the Chen, Yang, Wu, and Sun styles of traditional Tai Chi.

Hatha yoga is a slower practice, and you’ll hold poses for longer than you would in a flow-style yoga class. This means it’s a great practice for beginners and for people who want a more gentle activity that can help reduce stress and create mind-body awareness. There are 84 poses in classical hatha yoga.

A dynamic, total body workout featuring classical Pilates exercises with the use of a small equipment for many of the exercises. Pilates is unique in that it’s low-impact, and it combines heightened mental focus with precise, controlled movements that challenge your small and large muscles in a way other workouts don’t.

Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline originating in ancient India. While stretching is certainly involved, yoga is also about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits.

Our Power Flow Yoga class is a style of yoga that emphasizes the physical aspect of yoga with building strength and flexibility. It focuses on linking breath with movement and incorporating dynamic sequences that require concentration and control. Power Flow Yoga is known for building stamina and developing body awareness through creative sequencing and postures that challenge both balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, endurance, and mobility.

Adult Aquatics

Through the natural resistance of water, Aqua-X strengthens and tones muscles, reduces muscle soreness, enhances circulation, and promotes flexibility. It’s an energetic, high-intensity water fitness class. Class is designed for all swim levels to target all of the muscles.

Splash to the beat of your own drum with Water Drumming! It brings together drum sticks, the pool and some splashing all for a great workout. It is low impact and uses the natural resistance of the water to strengthen and tone muscles, burn calories and have lots of fun!

Active Older Adult Classes (Land & Water)

Active Older Adult classes are open to all members, however they are specifically designed the Active Older Adult Community. 

The YMCA of the USA and American Arthritis Foundation joined together to create this low impact water recreational exercise program for people with arthritis, and other everyday aches and pains. This is a shallow-end class, it is not necessary to know how to swim.

Make friends and meet new people! This class is a basic level water exercise class that uses the natural buoyancy and resistance of water and equipment to work toward improving participant flexibility, muscular strength, and cardiovascular endurance. Class is taught in the shallow end, no need to know how to swim!

This dance class is all about burning calories and having fun while learning specific dance moves. Participants will start with simple dance moves then step into more complex sequences that build both stamina and strength. This class is modifiable for most fitness levels.

This is a fitness class that combines a variety of exercises to help increase cardio endurance while strengthening muscle. Participants will enjoy basic aerobics as well as working on their strength with hand weights or bands. This workout can be as an interval or circuit, or as a half cardio, half strength.

Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or
standing support.

This class involves a variety of intensity levels alternated with rest periods and ishighly effective in conditioning the cardiovascular system while increasing muscle strength. The workouts will include a mix of cardio exercises and resistance training.

This water fitness program is held in the deep end of the pool and provides a non-impact but challenging cardiovascular workout. Participants will use flotation belts and Styrofoam barbells to perform a variety of motions including water walking and running, abdominal work and toning exercises.

The class is broken into 15-minute increments. The class design is learning a cardio routine, functional training to help strengthen the muscles used for balance and Chair Yoga. This class is intended for any older adult concerned with fall prevention. A chair will be utilized.

Activate your aqua exercise urge for variety! Splash® offers LOTS of fun and shallow water moves to improve agility, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance. No swimming ability is required, and a kickboard is used to develop strength, balance, and coordination.

Senior stretch is a class that provides flexibility and increases range of motion for the entire body. The instructor will focus on all major muscle groups with a variety of different types of stretch techniques. The goal is for your body to feel better, prevent injury, and increase range of motion. A chair will be utilized.

Tai chi is a type of low-impact and weight-bearing exercise that began as a martial art. As it developed, it took on the purpose of enhancing physical and mental health. Tai chi involves slow, gentle movements, deep breathing, and meditation. Qigong is a practice that involves a series of postures and exercises — including slow, circular movements — regulated breathing, focused meditation, and self-massage

Move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and a final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

Zumba Gold is a less intense dance routine than Zumba. The class is designed for older adults using modified movements. Some of the benefits you’ll receive from the class are enhanced strength, improvement of flexibility, coordination of hands, arms and shoulders, improvement of balance and posture, reduction of stress and increased energy.

Teen Fitness

Teens must complete these programs prior to utalizing the wellness center or weight room. 

Teens 11-15, allows access to the Fitness Center ONLY with a guardian present. Build endurance and lean muscles by learning to use the cardio machines properly. This class is for those individuals 11-15 yrs old that would like to use the fitness center with a parent. The class teaches basic aerobic and endurance training exercises for the entire body, as well as fitness center rules and etiquette. A mandatory practical and written test MUST be passed in order to use the fitness center, and a special membership pass will be issued. *Proof of age must be supplied at registration.

Program consists of (1) session scheduled by the instructor to fit into the student and parent’s schedule.

Teens 13-15, allows access to the Fitness Center AND the Free Weight Room without a guardian present. Build strong bones and muscles by learning to lift weights properly. This class is for those individuals that would like to use the fitness center but are not yet 16 years old. Class is open for 13-15 years old* girls and boys to gain access to the Fitness Center and Free Weight Room with-out a parent. The class teaches basic strength training exercises for the entire body, as well as weight room rules and etiquette. A mandatory practical and written test MUST be passed in order to use either workout rooms, and a special membership pass will be issued. *Proof of age must be supplied at registration.

Program consists of (1) session scheduled by the instructor to fit into the student’s schedule.

This program is available for all members to use our 9-lap mile indoor track to reach your step goals! Keep track of your miles and receive your exclusive Walking Club shirt FREE when you reach 100, 500 & 1000 miles!
